Farmhouse White Bread

Soft, golden, and perfectly fluffy — this classic farmhouse white bread is a family favorite! It’s simple to make, perfect for sandwiches or toast, and tastes just like home.

Ingredients

·       2 cups (475 g) warm water

·       ¾ cup (150 g) sugar

·       1½ tablespoons (14 g) yeast

·       5½ to 6 cups (660–720 g) bread flour or all-purpose flour

·       ¼ cup (60 g) oil or melted butter

·       1½ teaspoons (9 g) salt

Instructions

1.   Mix and knead
In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, combine combine ingredients and knead on speed 2 in a Bosch or KitchenAid mixer for 6–8 minutes, adding additional flour as needed until the dough is soft and smooth. (If kneading by hand, knead for about 10 minutes.)

2.   First rise
Cover the dough with a warm, damp tea towel and let rise for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until expanded in size.

3.   Shape loaves
Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal portions. Shape each portion into a loaf and place in greased loaf pans.

4.   Second rise
Let rise for 30-45 minutes, or until the dough has risen just over the top edge of the pans. Temperature and elevation will play a role in how long yours takes to rise!

5.   Bake
Bake in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 30 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the loaves sound hollow when tapped.

6.   Finish and cool
Remove immeditated from the loaf pans, brush the tops with melted butter if desired, and cover with a dry tea towel to cool for the softest crust.
