Traditional Irish Soda Bread
Ingredients:
- 3 ½ c all-purpose flour (400g)
- 1 tsp salt (5g)
- 1 tsp baking soda (5g)
- 1 ½ c buttermilk (360g)
*You can also substitute the buttermilk with 1 1/2 c milk + 1 Tbs vinegar, or 1 ½ c water + 1/3 c buttermilk powder
Instructions:
Add all ingredients to a large mixing bowl and mix together. Stir until a sticky dough has formed, and turn out onto a floured surface. Dust the top of the dough and your hands with flour, and flip the dough several times until it is more manageable and easier to handle. Form into a round ball of dough or boule. Score about ½ an inch into the top with the traditional x or cross shape, place into a Dutch oven, cast iron skillet, or onto a baking sheet. If using a Dutch oven, place to lid on top, and put into a preheated 450-degree oven and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the lid and brown for 3-5 minutes. If open baking on a skillet or baking sheet, bake at 400 degrees for 45-55 minutes, or until browned to your liking. Knock on the bottom of the loaf. If it sounds hollow, the bread is cooked through and ready to eat! I like to eat this simple bread hot out of the oven!
